Vanessa DeGarcia

Vanessa DeGarcia, photographer with a spirited artistic approach to photography. She uses post production software to shape and mold pixels.

Photography is Vanessa's main discipline. Working as a portrait photographer for several years has given her the flexibility to live and work in and close to her home in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The photojournalistic branch of her work is called Sunset Park Stills.

Sunset Park Stills came about in 2009 while walking through the culturally rich neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York called Sunset Park. Vanessa started with a series of religious statues and altars stationed in front of homes and inside of businesses in the neighborhood (Sunset Park Santos). It has expanded to include various street scenes, people in everyday life, and what one might see on a walk through the area. The photographic stories are usually taken on the go with a smart phone. Most recently, Vanessa has begun to capture images of Sunset Park using pinhole cameras she's made out of small paint cans. The series started during the pandemic and has continued bit by bit.
